Your competition

September 1, 2015

So there’s another organization across town or in your service area that does virtually the same work you do. What should you do?

  • Go deep into who you are.
  • Lead with what makes you special, different, important and meaningful.
  • Don’t try to be them.
  • Don’t try to be the anti-them. Spending valuable time and resources explaining the differences will not bring anyone closer to you.
  • Even if you take the underdog/smaller/nichier role, make sure your materials look just as professional and compelling as those of your competition. (I.e. don’t produce your fundraising on the office laser printer.)

Remember that with competition like this, it can be a good thing to have more than one winner. Often there is room for everyone.
